TEHRAN (IQNA) – Every individual, as a part of the society, is responsible for his or her relationship with other people. Usually, the strength of a relationship depends on one’s behavior and conduct.

Fulfilling a promise

Al-Wafa bil-Ahd (fulfilling one’s promises) is among good moral virtues that plays an important role in strengthening relationships.

Al-Wafa bil-Ahd helps enhance trust among people. The Quran refers to it as one of the characteristics of believers:

“(Prosperous are those) who preserve their trusts and pledges.” (Verse 8 of Surah Al-Muminun)

It is obvious that the most important capital of a society is mutual trust among its people. Basically, it is this common trust that brings tougher different groups of people and creates a bond among them. It is the backbone of coordinated social activities and cooperation at the social level.

Making pledges and covenants is an emphasis on the need to preserve this mutual trust. But when pledges are unfulfilled and covenants are broken one after another, there will be no trace of this great social capital any longer and the seemingly integrated society will be divided into powerless and scattered groups.

That is why, according to a Hadith from the Holy Prophet (PBUH), when Muslims break their promises, enemies will overcome them.

The covenant mentioned here includes all divine and human covenants such as political, economic, social, and commercial ones and marriage. It is an extensive concepts that covers all aspects of human life, including beliefs and actions.

Those who break promises and covenants are among evil-doers and harm-doers and anyone with his God-given Fitrat (nature) censures and scorns them. This is proof that the necessity to fulfill promises is a God-given issue.

God says in the Holy Quran that He likes those who fulfil their promises:

“Those who keep their promise and observe piety should know that God certainly loves the pious ones.” (Verse 76 of Surah Al-Imran)
